Discover the fauna and flora of Savoie with your family

Published February 4, 2023

The mountains are the nest of many animal species but also have a surprising flora! Savoie, thanks to its commitment to nature and the environment, protects its areas and maintains an abundance of flora and fauna.

The fauna and flora of Savoie

It is therefore not uncommon to come across the famous marmots (or at least to hear their whistles) while hiking from our residences Montagnettes. They generally animate the plains from April to the end of September. The luckiest ones will be able to see chamois, symbol of the Alps, ibexes, mouflons, foxes, and a multitude of species of birds and raptors.

The golden eagle, the largest bird of prey in France, was reintroduced in Savoie and its neighbor Haute-Savoie several years ago and you will be able to observe its 2m80 wingspan in the air. Although the lynx is present in the Alps, it would be your lucky day if you see it. The lakes and rivers of Savoie are an abundant source of trout, char, pike etc.

When you stay in our residence in Tignes Le Taos in Tignes, you are at the start of hikes that take you to the Vanoise National Park, the first national park created in France. It is home to nearly 4000 chamois, 1600 ibex and a hundred or so nesting birds. On its slopes, paths and summits grow 1200 species of flowers!

Summer hiking from Tignes

Throughout the region, there is a significant presence of the famous edelweiss, but also of the snow gentian, white genepi and wormwood plants that are at the origin of the typical Savoyard spirits! Many of these plants are protected to restrict their collection. In the forest areas, coniferous and deciduous trees share the territory.

As you can see, the region has a rich environment. The Bureau des Guides des Belleville offers many walks to observe the fauna but also walks to discover the flora. Ideal for families with young children, their guided walks take you on the tracks of ibexes, marmots, birds or even to the picking of blueberry pie!

Hiking from Val Thorens

For the older and braver ones, leave at dawn to observe nature waking up or off-trail to observe them closer to their habitat (always respecting the environment and the animals!).
