Ice diving at altitude

Published on 10 May 2021

Are you looking for an unusual activity in an exceptional setting? Choose to live a unique experience in the heart of the Savoyard mountains: high altitude diving.

The groupe Montagnettes offers you the opportunity to try this activity during your summer holidays. This wild adventure, suitable for beginners from the age of 15, will bring you closer to nature and promote your well-being.

Diving is about leaving your comfort zone to explore a new place, a new environment. In this parallel world, you are in harmony with nature and put your breathing and relaxation at the heart of your priorities. Your concentration is on yourself for a moment: in the silence of your swim, you hear only the sound of the bubbles with each of your breaths.

The advantage of diving at altitude? On the one hand, you will be immersed in an idyllic setting: a lake surrounded by mountains. On the other hand, the atmospheric pressure is lower than at sea level, so you can better experience the descent to the depths.

Such immersion in a quieter world makes you fully aware of your weight in the face of these majestic mountains, and offers you a break from your everyday worries.

Equipment will be provided: wet suit, mask, fins, scuba tank and regulator, all in a good Savoyard atmosphere!
You will be able to re-enact the mythical scenes from the film The Big Blue and experience the peace of mind that comes from discovering the ocean floor.

High altitude diving also exists in a winter format: ice diving. A discipline that is still little known, the equipment is the same as for traditional diving but the sensations are different. You need to be dressed in a dry suit that allows you to forget the temperature of the lake water at 1°C.

This discipline, which is also accessible to beginners, allows you to discover a world that seems unreal, frozen like ice. Instead of looking down to admire the bottom, you have to look upwards, towards the layer of ice that lets the sun's light rays in. The attention is then focused on the air bubbles that move under the ice, creating luminous halos, giving a feeling of calm.

You have to let yourself go completely to enjoy the natural spectacle of being immersed in such an environment. The water shows itself in a panoply of colours thanks to the play of light: crystalline, azure, pastel, indigo, night, etc... You find yourself alone with yourself, the silence allows you to stop thinking but only to admire, to be at peace as if hypnotised by the beauty of this ephemeral ceiling. Walking with your feet against the ice, head down, unreal sensations that will remain forever engraved in your memory.

A new feature is that this activity can now be done underwater. A multitude of holes are dug in the surface of the frozen lake and our partners guide you as you wander from one opening to the next. A great way to combine thrills with a total sense of inner peace.

This discipline brings together diving, mountains and snow, a winning trio that Montagnettes We are pleased to offer you the opportunity to discover this sport in Val Thorens and Tignes.
